AGM Guest Speakers: Glenda Burrows and Bonnie Price

Since its incorporation in 1998, the Icelandic Memorial Society of Nova Scotia has strived to educate the public and promote awareness of the history of the Icelandic settlers who made Markland their home from 1875-1882. We have focused on promoting local history through school visits, public speaking engagements, public tours and our ongoing projects. Our latest project, the historical documentary, ‘The Log Cabin at Markland’ is written and produced by Glenda Burrows, chair of the Society and Bonnie Price, treasurer and membership chair.  This 30 minute DVD tells the story of the hard working Icelandic families who struggled to eke out a living in Markland. It also recounts the work of members and volunteers as they build a log cabin replica in the old settlement and thus fulfill the dream of founding member and Chair, Dolly Belmore.

Call for Board Nominations!

It is that time of year we start thinking of the upcoming annual general meeting and with that the upcoming executive! We are seeking nominations for President, secretary, social/cultural chair, and members at large. If you have questions about the positions, please contact Myra at: 902-889-2860

As the President, you lead board meetings and work with the board to create a plan for the upcoming year of events and activities.

The secretary position requires an ear for details to record the board meeting and annual meeting minutes along with drafting correspondences.

Social/cultural chair position has been vacant for a few years. This position needs someone who is creative and likes coming up with a plan for events. These do not have to be big events but things like the Sibelius Symphony evening or a night at the movies, etc.

Last but not least, we have openings for 3 members-at-large for the coming year. These people are a group that attend meetings, often help out at events and provide great feedback at board meetings.

Each position has its own tasks assigned but one thing you will notice about the board is that it functions as a cohesive team. The amount of time needed to be dedicated varies depending on what is going on in the course of a year; that said a few hours a month with a bit more leading up to the annual general meeting or events throughout the year is sometimes needed.

Every year the board tries to organize events and activities to engage the membership. This is made possible by having amazing people join our board with fresh minds and ideas each year. Get on board this year to enhance the association and in turn, improve membership opportunities! We accept self-nominations as well. E-mail or call Lis Banfield (banfield.lis@gmail.com OR 902-864-1696 ) your nomination today!

REMEMBER - the AGM is potluck.  Bring your favourite treats to share!!!
